IHMS is contracted by the Commonwealth of Australia, represented by the Department of Home Affairs, to provide primary and mental health care services within the Australian detention network, to a standard of care broadly comparable to that available to the general Australian community under the public health system. The foundations of this health service are the eight onsite integrated multidisciplinary IHMS medical facilities located in each of the detention centres on mainland Australia.

  1. Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre, WA
  2. Perth Immigration Detention Centre, WA
  3. Adelaide Immigration Transit Accommodation, SA
  4. Christmas Island Immigration Detention Centre, WA
  5. Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation, VIC
  6. Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, NSW
  7. Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation, QLD

The care is provided by an experienced team of primary health care professionals including IHMS general practitioners, registered nurses and dental practitioners with support from a comprehensive network of allied health professionals. IHMS also has a well-resourced team of mental health professionals who provide onsite care at all locations across the network comprising of mental health nurses, counsellors, psychologists and visiting consultant psychiatrists. Additional support is provided through regular mental health screening and a Psychological Support Program.

The onsite facilities are supported by a centralised team comprising of a team of registered nurses and medical officers in Sydney which provides an after-hours health advice service. This provides after-hours medical support to all the immigration centres. IHMS also has a team of operational and clinical directors in its head office to provide oversight to the network thus ensuring a safe, effective and efficient health service with a system of continuous quality improvement.

In addition to providing first line health care, IHMS also undertakes health-promotion and disease-prevention activities, assisting people with chronic conditions to manage their own health.

IHMS manages the healthcare of people in community detention through its network of community providers. People in community detention have the choice of a designated GP clinic, which is responsible for referring them to further services as required, consistent with Australian public health standards and waiting times.
