IHMS- Specialists in providing care in challenging environments

IHMS provides healthcare to detainees within Australia’s onshore immigration detention network, as well as offshore in Nauru. IHMS has been providing services in the Immigration Detention Network for 20 years.

Personnel and Infrastructure – IHMS provides health and medical services to facilities within the IDN. These facilities are located in both urban and rural environments. IHMS has developed a flexible staffing model which allows us to scale up and down our workforce in order to efficiently meet the fluctuating demand on healthcare services from the Immigration Detention Network.

Services  

Immigration detention healthcare – IHMS offers an extensive range of health and medical services to detainees within Australia’s immigration detention network. The onsite services we provide are: 

Primary Healthcare

Experienced GPs and Registered Nurses deliver primary healthcare to patients across the Immigration Detention Network, taking into account the diverse and potentially complex healthcare needs.
Mental Healthcare

IHMS provides an extensive range of mental healthcare services, including routine assessment, psychiatrists, psychologists and registered nurses specialising in mental healthcare.
Health Advice

The Health Advice Service provides health management advice on for any patient in an onshore immigration detention facility, or for a person detained for immigration questioning and/or clearance.
Health Assessments

IHMS undertakes physical and mental health assessments of patients upon entry, and regularly thereafter, as well as prior to departure from the network. These assessments ensure ongoing visibility of the health issues of patients.
Addiction Services

IHMS delivers individualised drug and alcohol treatment services according to the needs of people in detention, which can include peer support programs, counselling and psychology and opioid substitution programs.
Health Education

IHMS offers a range of education related to preventative healthcare topics pertinent to people within immigration detention network. Ongoing education is also provided to our staff and other stakeholders on site.
Community Detention

IHMS oversees the provision of medical services for people living in the community through a network of primary, specialist and allied health providers with access for patients to public hospital and associated health services.
Medical Escorts

IHMS organises specialised medical escorts for both domestic and international travel for people transferring between detention centres or returning to their countries of origin.
Freedom of Information

IHMS responds to information requests, freedom of information requests and legal requests for information. IHMS also assists in responses to questions posed by numerous other stakeholder and advocacy groups.
Clinical Reporting

IHMS provides a range of clinical reporting services to the Department, stakeholders, and other parties, providing insight into the health needs and health trends of people in detention.

Covid Services

COVID-19 Outbreak Plan

IHMS successfully manages COVID-19 in immigration detention facilities with the implementation of Outbreak Management Plan and measures including screening, COVID-19 vaccination program, education sessions, excellent infection control practices and ensuring access to anti-viral therapy.
COVID-19 Staff Safety

IHMS ensures the safety of all staff operating with potential exposure to COVID-19 and maintains required PPE and testing supplies. IHMS collaborates with multiple stakeholders including local public health units to ensure the best outcomes for patients, staff and facilities.
COVID-19 Vaccination

IHMS has been vaccinating residents in the immigration detention network against COVID-19. IHMS tracks all vaccinations administered, orchestrates follow-ups for all multi-dose vaccinations, monitors adverse reactions, organises all vaccine ordering and logistics, and manages the complexity of cold chain management for all locations, including the remote Christmas Island site.
