Medical Records Requests

Detainees, asylum seekers and refugees residing at an onshore Immigration Detention Facility or Nauru may request a copy of their IHMS medical record directly from the IHMS clinic or IHMS settlement clinic at site.

  • Clients residing in community detention may request a copy of their medical record directly from their community GP.

  • Third parties wishing to request a copy of the IHMS medical record of a detainee currently in an onshore Immigration Detention Facility should email their request together with a signed and dated consent form to recordrequests@ihms.com.au

  • Third parties wishing to request a copy of the IHMS medical record of an asylum seeker or refugee currently residing in Nauru should email their request together with a signed and dated consent form to recordrequests@ihms.com.au

Former detainees or asylum seekers or third parties acting on their behalf can request a copy of their medical records in either of two ways:

  1. By making a request under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and emailing that request together with a signed and dated consent form to recordrequests@ihms.com.au; or

  2. By making a request to the Department of Home Affairs under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) (FOI Act). Information on how to make a request under the FOI Act is available at https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/foi/Pages/how-to-make-a-request.aspx. The website includes an online form, which the Department requests applicants to complete.

Please note that IHMS does not have authority to release records which are the property of the hospitals of the respective host nation. To that end, for access to Nauru or Taiwan hospital medical records please contact the respective host governments.
